In sports, the slot is a specific position within a wide receiver corps that allows quarterbacks to stretch the defense and attack all levels of the defense. Without a strong slot receiver corps, teams would have a much harder time executing a variety of passing routes and running plays. The slot receiver must have great route-running skills and be able to run precise patterns. He is typically smaller than outside wide receivers and needs to be able to beat coverage with his speed alone. He should also have excellent awareness of the field and be able to identify which defenders are where on the defense, so he can avoid them.

He must also be a good blocker, although his blocking duties are generally less taxing than those of the outside receivers. He may have to chip a safety or cornerback on run plays or even perform a crack back block on defensive ends on pass protection. On running plays designed to the outside of the field, he will often be called into pre-snap motion by the quarterback and act as a lead blocker in combination with the fullback or tight end.

Slot players should also be able to excel on special teams, especially on kickoff and punt return teams. They should have good ball-catching skills and be able to work in tandem with the kickoff and punt return team to set up returns and block for each other.
